Your Petition Signatures in Action!

JOIN US IN PARLIAMENT - TUESDAY 22 NOV - 1.15pm

AN OPPORTUNITY TO LET THE STATE GOVERNMENT  KNOW THAT IT MUST STOP PLAYING POLITICS WITH OUR HEALTH, OUR ENVIRONMENT AND OUR FUTURE.

WHERE: Bottom of the steps at Parliament House (entrance on Spring St, top of Bourke St).  If possible, please wear a green top or t-shirt. We will then be shown to the gallery and seated to witness the tabling and noting of the petition.

WHY: Lodging our petition in parliament and having it noted will continue to draw attention to the Alcoa Anglesea brown coal mine issues.  It will motivate 'on the record' parliamentary discussion and debate which can become an extremely useful resource and tool when lobbying councillors, parliamentarians and corporations.

By simply turning up we will increase the impact of the petition and show the strength of the local and surrounding communities.  This is a great way to apply pressure on politicians and corporations to let them know that a community is campaigning.

The hidden health impacts of burning coal

The mining and burning of coal: effects on health and the environment.
William M Castleden, David Shearman, George Crisp and Philip Finch,
The Medical Journal of Australia, 2011; 195 (6): 333-335,

Communitites in which coalmining or burning occurs have been shown to suffer significant health impacts.

The health and climate costs of coal are unseen, and when costs to health systems are included, coal is an expensive fuel.

Anglesea residents shift up a gear in their campaign for clean air.

A group of Surf Coast residents and holiday makers in Anglesea rallied together yesterday at a public forum to discuss Alcoa’s 50 year brown coal mine lease renewal.   Speaking to more than 250 concerned residents at a community forum yesterday, Anglesea Air Action group spokesman Mike Lawrence revealed, “There are two calls for action;

1. A Government funded, independent, air quality assessment in Anglesea

2. A transition by Alcoa towards renewable energy for their continuing operations at Point Henry.”
